Holbox is the perfect place to relax, unwind and just do nothing. The place is considered by many to be Mexico’s “best kept secret” and has established itself as a tourist destination. The island is still remote enough that Holbox is not overrun and can maintain its sleepy and unspoiled atmosphere. The sand-only island is located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It extends over a length of 42 km and a width of about 2 km. In the north there is a 34 km long virgin sandy beach. It is separated from the mainland to the south by the shallow Yalahao Lagoon, which is populated by flamingos and pelicans, among others.
