Guatemala is the land of contrasts, land of the Mayas and land of eternal spring. Guatemala is more colorful than almost any other country. Tikal, probably the most impressive of all accessible Mayan cities, lies mystically in the jungle near Lake Petén-Itzá. In the highlands, the colonial town of Antigua, colorful Indian markets and the deep blue Lake Atitlán, which lies spectacularly between several volcanoes, await you. The people of Guatemala are very warm and speak more than 50 indigenous languages in addition to Spanish. On the Caribbean side you will find the coast of the Rio Dulce region inhabited by Garifunas (descendants of African slaves) and on the Pacific some remote dark beaches with little tourism.
