The state of Chiapas offers Mayan culture and natural wonders. Nowhere in Mexico is the landscape as entertaining and nowhere are the destinations as diverse as in Chiapas. The mountainous highlands are characterized by extensive pine forests, impressive cave systems, thundering waterfalls, rushing rivers and deep canyons. The lower regions are covered by lush jungle. Some of the most beautiful natural parks are located here. Among them are the Canyon del Sumidero National Park, the Agua Azul waterfalls, and the Lagunas de Montebello. The relative remoteness of the region allows the indigenous population to continue their lifestyle and traditions, making the towns with their markets some of the most colorful and lively in all of Mexico. Impressive, historical evidence of Mayan culture is also the temple city of Palenque, built in the deep rainforest.
